Biodiesel Co-op

What Is Biodiesel ?

Biodiesel is a renewable fuel that can be made from oils such as canola, sunflower or soybean. When biofuel is made from waste oils or fats, it offers a sustainable alternative that  benefits the local economy and doesn’t  drive up food prices.

How It's Made

Back to Basics is committed to producing biofuel from recycled oils, minimizing the impact on food production. Our central facility is local to our operations and membership base, minimizing transportation and our own ecological footprint.

Making biodiesel from natural vegetable oils is a simple procedure involving a chemical/catalytic process. The final produce can be used in your vehicle’s fuel system with no modification to the engine.

Benefits and Uses of Biodiesel

Biodiesel can be used in any existing diesel engine, including tractors, cars, trucks, generators and home heating furnaces. It is readily biodegradable, less toxic than salt, safe to handle and store and does not give off volatile vapours. It has greater lubricating properties than regular diesel fuel and can increase the life of your engine. In fact, diesel engines were originally designed to run on natural oils!

Better Efficiency

Not only are diesel engines more efficient than gasoline engines (by 25% to 50%), biodiesel will increase the life of your engine! The added lubrication and cleaner burning properties of biodiesel keep your engine running cleaner, quieter and longer!

Less Pollution

When you use biodiesel in your engine your dramatically reduce greenhouse gases, carcinogens, toxins, soot, hydrocarbons and sulfur produced by your diesel engine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I pay to join a cooperative?

There are many advantages to being a member of a cooperative - some financial, some personal. Back to Basics' Biodiesel Co-op is part of an organization that supports our local community and our members. All profits go straight back to members -- either in the form of lower prices for fuel or as dividends at year end. The more you buy, the larger the benefit for members.

Do biodiesel fuels raise food prices?

Back to Basics is committed to using only waste oils for its biodiesel production. It is our strong conviction that Ontario’s rich farmland should be used for food production.  The use of waste products is what makes the emerging biofuels industry a sustainable one!
